Little Rock derives its name from a small rock formation on the south bank of the Arkansas River called the "Little Rock". The Little Rock was used by early river traffic as a landmark and became a well known river crossing. Little Rock is the capital and most populous city in Arkansas.
Fort Smith was established as a western frontier military post in 1817, when it was also a center of fur trading. The city developed there. It became well known as a base for migrants' settling of the "Wild West" and for its law enforcement heritage.
Fayetteville is home to several museums and is famous for being the first American city named for the Marquis de LaFayette. It had previously been known as Cross Creek, settled in the 1700s by mostly Scots. It is as an academic center, and also known as the "Athens of the Ozarks".
